Exciting times at the Balbarrup Lake! Several trial tanks have been set up at the dam to grow on trout juveniles. All is looking good and next week building will commence on the holding dam just below the 15 acre Balbarrup Lake. The project will based on the aquaponics model, which is considered the world’s most efficient use of water ( Wilson 2006). Water from the lake will go through the trout tanks, then onto a hydroponically grown vegetable crop where the nutrients from the trout will ensure the crop is organic. After returning into the holding dam, the water will then be used on the property’s nectarine orchard.

The good news for trout fishing is that there will plenty of trout for Clover Cottage guests to fish!

Scott Coglan, managing editor of Western Angler and mad keen fisherman and fly fisherman took time out recently with a few fishing mates to enjoy a spot of fly fishing on the new Balbarrup fishing lake, which Paul has stocked with mature Browns and Rainbows. As a result of a “superb fly fishing experience” Scott wrote an article about the new trout lake and fly fishing experience.

Try Redfin Perch for a Change

After an enjoyable morning fly fishing on Balbarrup Lake for trout, Francis, a keen fisherman, took a flick rod up the Warren River and landed a good sized Redfin Perch using a lure. Great eating too!

After a recent visit to Clover Cottage Mike Roennfeldt wrote a fishing article in the Weekend West this week proclaiming that Clover Cottage’s Balbarrup Fly Fishing lake gave him…

The Balbarrup Lake is now available for a small extra charge to guests staying at Clover Cottage Country Retreat. Half day or full day fishing is on offer. Of course there is also the laid-back fishing in the home ponds or on the Warren River, which is included with your stay.

Mike Roennfeldt, Western Australian Newspaper fishing writer, spent several days at Clover Cottage wallowing in water and trout. It was wonderful having Mike and Sarah spend time with us having lots of laughs and enjoying the local wines. While Sarah and I checked out the Country Gardens on display, Mike used every spare moment to slip over to the Balbarrup lake for a spot of trout fishing or try his luck on the trout ponds at Clover Cottage.

“We just wanted to share some photos with you. We truly enjoyed having Floyd come join us for breakfast in the mornings, especially my young son Christian.
And the reason for our stay, the fishing, was the highlight of the trip, as Christian caught his very first fish. He still talks about it!

Canoeing Down the Warren River

It was a gathering of family and good friends for a canoe trip from Clover Cottage down the meandering Warren River for several hours and still be back at the farm in time for the West Coast Eagles first final game.

Although the river is running well there were challenges in lots of places with rocks, rapids and bushes to challenge the adventurers

Canoeing on the Warren River is best late winter and early spring, just after the rains. Fishing is always a pleasant pastime with redfin perch lurking in the shadows all year round. Trout and freshwater cobbler are also trawling the waters!

It was a gathering of old mates at Clover Cottage for a boys weekend of good wine, good food, good laughs and, of course, some serious fishing! Well known local musician Rod Vervest with his very good friends Geoff and Frances were tutored by Francis on the fine points of fly fishing. The fly fishing tuition was very impressive! Geoff landed rainbow, kissed it and let it travel on it’s way!
