Caterpillars in the Forest

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Although the trees  around the farm are looking cool and very green, the forest near  Clover Cottage appears to be scorched by fire!  This is the work of a very small caterpillar larvae of the gumleaf skeletoniser moth, which has devastated the the foliage of the eucalypts  in the forest.  Department of Environment and Conservation research scientist, Dr Janet Farr said “The defloliation does have an impact on the trees, but most trees recover, although this can take some years!”  The oubreak is associated with warm, dry conditions and predicts it will get more severe into February.     If you interested in reading more about this little caterpillar with a big impact visit  http://www.dec.wa.gov.au/index2.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=3483&Itemid=99999999  and read the article written by Dr Janet Farr.

Renewed History for Clover Cottage

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

Historic Clover Cottage (built in 1875) is having a face lift!  After restoring the original rooms back their former glory with new jarrah polished floor boards and revamped ceilings, Paul is now on the homerun with  kitchen and bathroom extensions.

Using hand fired bricks (similiar date to Clover Cottage), which were salvaged many years ago, the  bathroom and kitchen now boast views of the tennis court, trout lakes and the old garden.  Traditionally Clover Cottage was built with local timber, hand fired bricks and hand crafted doors and windows.  In keeping with the history, Paul has also  hand crafted  the french doors, windows and built  the bathroom ceiling using the local timbers, which were milled locally and  part of the  ’stillstanding’   135 year old Cypress pine from the farm driveway.   At this moment he is laying the blackbutt floor in the kitchen. Stay posted for more photos!   There are plans to make the cottage available in the future for those extra special romantic nights for our special guests!
